Creative Inspiration: The Smiths

I am one of 5 kids in my family.  When living in a large family you live in tight quarters, you share rooms, there are way too many kids to a single bathroom and, in our house, a 3:1 girl to Aqua Net ratio.  Truth be told, it can get ugly.

Because of these tight quarters, some things are just forced into your life.  One of these things for me was the English alternative rock band, The Smiths.  My brother Travis would crank album after album, day after day…. get through them all and then start again. Travis was into the alternative scene (when it was actually alternative) and would always bring home “interesting” music, but The Smiths at the time were constant.

I just didn’t get it.

There’s only so many times a 12 year old girl can listen to asking if there’s a vacancy for a backscrubber at the YMCA. (one of our favorite songs to mock).  At the time, I was more into Wham!  ”Wake me up!  Before you go-go!” Now THAT I can relate too, because Idon’t want to be hanging on like a yo-yo.  It’s so true.  They nailed it.

Every morning when I would hear the record start I would groan and loudly complain to the air, anyone in the vicinity, or to the stairs down to his room to please make it stop!  Morrissey is so aaaannnnoooyyying! (I was an adorable child.)

Now, in some cruel twist of fate, I find The Smiths brilliant.  I get them.  How many times have I asked for a backscrubber?  Too many times to count.

But, no really… Morrissey is a genius of sorts.  Anybody can write a love song like this:

Ooh, baby, I think I love you
From head to toe
Ooh, baby, I think I love you
From head to toe

(thank you Lisa Lisa)

But it is a true artist that writes a love song like:

And if a double-decker bus
crashes in to us
to die by your side
is such a heavenly way to die
and if a ten ton truck
kills the both of us
to die by your side
well the pleasure, the privilege is mine

(from There is a Light that Never Goes Out)

I love his off-beat, rambling, and downright strange songs.  It makes the music scene so much more interesting. And the melodies are actually beautiful and timeless creations.

So thank you, Travis, for your Smiths obsession.  I never thought I’d be nostalgic, let alone inspired about something I once loved to hate.

Brothers actually know something.

A lesson 30+ years in the making.
